Malaga's Markets: Tradition and Gastronomy

Malaga's markets are an important part of the city's gastronomic tradition. Witnesses to times past and protagonists in the daily life of thousands of people, these spaces deserve their history to be known.

They offer visitors the freshest produce – fresh and cured meats, fruit and vegetables, and the best fish and seafood from our surrounding land and sea.

The architecture of Malaga's markets also deserves a special mention, such as the neo-Moorish style of Atarazanas Market and Salamanca Market or the avant-garde El Carmen Market.

Atarazanas Central Market

This remarkable commercial space is located in the heart of the capital's city centre. It is housed in the location where the Nasrid shipyards stood in the 14th century. Following the Christian conquest of the city, the site was used as a warehouse, arsenal, military hospital and barracks. Of the shipyard, only the arch in the main façade has been preserved, and this has been declared an important monument of great historical and artistic influence.

Salamanca Market

What is most striking about this unique market with its neo-Moorish architecture, is its façade, which is the same on both sides. This is the second busiest market in the city after Atarazanas, a market with a lot of activity where the stalls have been handed down over several generations.

Huelin Market

This market is located in one of the city's traditional fishing neighbourhoods. Wide passageways and galleries host family stalls offering an amazing variety of products from Malaga.

El Carmen Market

Renovated in 2010, this market has an avant-garde aesthetic and is home to more than 80 stalls offering fresh produce.

It also has a restaurant with a terrace where you can sample dishes from a wide menu specialising in fish and seafood.
