The Lagar de Torrijos Eco-museum is a home-winery in the mountains of Málaga, which dates from 1843. This building is substantially the same as when it was constructed; it contains all the old equipment used for obtaining sweet Málaga wine, as well as for obtaining extra virgin olive oil and bread making.
The press at the entrance to the Ecomuseu deserves special mention. It is spectacular with its large tree trunk and a one-ton stone for crushing and squeezing grapes. In an adjoining room we can see the vats where the must was fermented for about forty days. After this process the wine was transferred to barrels where it spent several months until its transfer and sale.
In several rooms of the house you can see the farm tools needed for working the crops grown on the land, and for growing the vines.
Such is the case of the olive, which replaced the wine business after the phylloxera invasion. One example is the oil press located in the Lagar de Torrijos. This consists of three 200-kilo rollers moved by an animal for producing oil.
There is also a bread oven, used today for recreational workshops, from where you take a piece you yourself have baked. The visit ends at the top of the house where the rooms are preserved with period decor and where you can imagine how the inhabitants of the wineries spent their time.
In the heart of Los Montes de Málaga, surrounded by pine trees is the Eco-museum Lagar de Torrijos. Constucted in 1843, it is the prototype of the area's Lagares (wineries) built for producing and marketing wine.
More than 800 wineries were working at the height of international marketing, producing sweet wines –those best known today– and dry or semi-sweet Málaga wines. The 900-square metre-building has two floors with rooms that describe the lifestyle and activities of its inhabitants.
